We were very pleased with Tom’s architectural design and landscaping work—and that’s an understatement. Our goals were to use native plants and make the hardscape natural too, using flagstone instead of more structured pavers for an artistic layout. Tom went above and beyond because he has deep, professional landscape architectural and plant knowledge. He not only knows what plants work well in which spaces in the yard, he knows all the suppliers so can get those often hard to find plants. Our yard included an undulating mounding design, a riverbed, a large cedar shade structure, attractive rock mulch, multiple varieties of evergreen trees and manzanita and large sitting boulders—all handpicked by Tom. He supervised the workers to lay those rocks, semi-buried in the ground, and facing just right, not just laying them on the surface, for a beautiful natural effect. The plants and flowers—all lovely native varieties—are staggered to make sure we have some blooms from Spring to Fall. Tom also managed the custom-design and engineering process for the shade structure and worked diligently on HOA approval maximizing the potential of the design as defined by the guidelines. Our project team was headed by Tom Schuster.  Tom created detailed drawings with his recommendations.  These were always presented to us together with the projected cost detailed out by component.  He spent as much time as we wanted discussing the plans, adding items, deleting items and discussing the cost options of doing things one way versus another. We had almost daily meetings with Tom, either in person or via telephone or email, to review progress.  Anytime we were set to move to another part of the project, we met and walked completely through that phase, many times with tape measure in hand.  This allowed us, Tom and the rest of the crew, to reach a complete understanding of what we wanted to accomplish up front and made the execution part easier for all of us.

Tom Schuster was the project manager for the landscaping on our new home in a development in far South Reno, in an area governed by multiple layered home owner’s associations (HOAs).  Tom provided the design and project oversight.  Our desire was to provide an inviting and comfortable area that would be natural in character and provide a small habitat area for some wildlife, primarily birds and butterflies. We met with Tom multiple times during the design process to refine the design within a specified budget.  During the process Tom interacted with the HOAs and the developer to get the necessary HOA approvals and to secure landscape construction access via undeveloped lots.  A criteria for the design was a desire by the owners for a unique design that was creative and artistic.  He listened carefully to the owner’s wishes on colors and types of plants, as all were incorporated in the design, including a unique fountain design worthy of a geologist which incorporated petrified wood.  The project was completed in a reasonable time with only a minor extension necessitated by the work and permit inspection by a subcontractor for electrical supply to the fountain.  We are greatly pleased with the result and would not hesitate to recommend Tom Schuster for the design and installation of landscaping.

Several years ago, an unfortunate incident left us with removing a pool and landscaping our back yard again.  The cost of the removal and then designing something new was overwhelming. (…) Tom (…) promptly returned our call and made an appointment to listen to our ideas and limitations.  There was much consideration of the options.  A decision was made and “magically,” the pool was removed, the ground filled appropriately and the most beautiful replacement in terms of cost effective and water sparing landscape was installed.  Each year the plant growth has been fantastic and there is not a day that goes by that we don’t enjoy our back yard.  The plants are easily maintained, provided beautiful color and are enjoyed not only us but the wildlife that it attracts. 

Fast forward to this winter and entering another summer living in a drought area.  The front yard was primarily grass and our water bills kept rising.  We called Tom again and with the same promptness, he came, listened to our ideas and helped create a plan.  We started with all the grandness that dreaming entails and then he helped us modify a desert landscape with color equal to an English garden and stayed within our budget.  He worked on the plan for an unlimited amount of hours and met with us to verify that we were all on the same page.  Once a decision was reached, the yard was transformed within two weeks.  The first year has already seen tremendous growth and each day there is new color.  It is clean, fresh and peaceful.  As important, our water bill has dropped by almost two-thirds on the high watering months.  A few plants did not make the winter and Tom replaced them.  One cannot ask for any better working relationship then to be listened to and a design built and implemented with an outstanding outcome. Anyone is welcome to drive by and see its beauty.  

Tom Schuster is the landscape architect who did a fantastic job designing the layout of our front and back yards.  He met with us at our home, listened to our thoughts and developed the design for our yards.  He incorporated pavers, the plants we were fond of, and curve designs into the landscape.  We are very proud of our property thanks to Tom.  He is extremely knowledgeable in horticulture, and landscape design.  He really knows what grows best in our area.  Tom keeps in touch with his projects even when the job has been completed.
